The young, the torch and Dionysos. Lampadedromies and Anthesteria in Classical Athens

A critical reassessment of the literary, epigraphical and iconographic evidence on the Lampadedromies in ancient Athens seems to suggest these agonistic and ritual races were also held in honor of Dionysus. As such, the paper seeks possible associations of the Dionysian Lampedromies with Anthesterian festival, to formulate a new hypothesis about the extent of the urban and periurban devotional path performed by young Lampadophoroi.
